When I traveled to West Virginia to clean out my father’s apartment, I knew I was there to say goodbye. What I didn’t know was that I was also there to begin a conversation.
Amidst the quiet evidence of his battle with addiction were his attempts to learn my craft. He had asked me to teach him how to make candles, a simple lesson that distance and time had kept from happening. Finding his half-finished pours and handwritten notes felt like inheriting a final, silent request.

He hadn’t just been trying to make candles; he was researching how to help people. He had notes on the science of addiction and lists of ways to support the friends and neighbors around him who were suffering. Even while fighting his own shadows, he had a helper's heart.
I realized that I didn't just lose a father; I inherited a mission. Session Candle Co. is my way of finishing that lesson and realizing his vision for community restoration.
